Water filter and strainer selector for mobile detailing

Build the flow, pressure-loss and connection requirement for a pump strainer, pressure-washer inlet filter or treatment prefilter, then screen one exact candidate.

Define the exact water-path requirement before choosing mesh, micron rating or port size. A filter that catches debris but starves the pump or washer is not compatible.

Installed-system requirement

Switch the display without changing the stored calculation.
Position and downstream equipment determine which evidence controls.
Use current instructions for the exact pump, washer, membrane or vessel.
Use a manufacturer curve, supplier calculation or measured allowance at the required flow.
L/min
Minimum flow reaching the downstream equipment before reserve.
%
A visible allowance above minimum flow; it does not replace testing.
bar
Highest pressure the body, bowl, seals and fittings can experience in this position.
bar
Maximum acceptable pressure drop at required flow while the filter is clean.
mm
Use the smallest permitted internal passage—not the outside hose or nominal thread label.

Exact filter or strainer candidate

Record the current manufacturer sheet for the exact housing, bowl and element.
Confirm installation position, water service, temperature and material compatibility.
Use flow and clean pressure-drop data at the required duty—not a connection size alone.
Confirm the housing, bowl, seals, element and fittings share the required limit.
Confirm thread standard, adapters, seals, flow direction and the smallest internal passage.
Record inspection, cleaning or replacement instructions and practical access in the vehicle.
L/min
Use the rating under the exact element and test conditions.
bar
Read or measure loss at the required flow; leave zero until it is evidenced.
bar
Use the lowest applicable limit across the assembled filter path.
mm
Measure or source the smallest clear passage through ports, adapters and valves.

Water-path decision

Map the complete water path first

Still needed: the exact pump, washer or treatment-system requirement, a documented pressure-loss allowance at the required flow, the required working flow, the highest pressure the filter body can experience, the maximum acceptable clean-filter pressure drop, the minimum clear-bore requirement for the complete connection path

Mesh or micron size alone cannot prove compatibility. Record the exact system instructions, working flow, pressure boundary, allowable loss and connection bore before comparing parts.

  1. 01

Use the exact pump, pressure-washer or treatment-system instructions to define filter position and required screen or cartridge; do not copy another vehicle build.

  2. 02

Require at least 0.0 L/min while keeping the clean-filter loss inside the entered allowance, then repeat the measurement as the element loads with debris.

  3. 03

Confirm the full pressure and temperature envelope, liquid and seal compatibility, flow direction, port threads and every reducer in the assembled path.

  4. 04

Mount the bowl or housing where it can be inspected, isolated, drained and serviced without spilling onto electrics or leaving contaminated water unsecured.

  5. 05

Stop and investigate falling inlet flow, cavitation, pump cycling, leaks, cracked housings or abnormal pressure; replacing the element does not repair an incompatible layout.

Compatibility boundary: mesh or micron rating is not selected by this calculator. The exact downstream manufacturer and source-water evidence control it.

Restriction is part of the specification

Protect the equipment without starving it.

A filter can catch debris and still be wrong for the system. The useful comparison is the complete candidate at the required flow, with the clean pressure loss, loaded-element service plan and smallest passage all visible.

01Read the exact manual

Record where the manufacturer permits or requires the strainer or filter.

02Define the duty

Set flow, reserve, highest pressure, allowable loss and clear bore.

03Screen one candidate

Check the exact housing, element, ports, seals and service instructions.

04Measure it assembled

Test delivery at the worst normal tank level and repeat as the element loads.

Keep three questions separate

Screen, housing and water path do different jobs.

  • The screen or cartridge must follow the exact downstream requirement.
  • The housing and seals must survive the actual pressure, temperature and water service.
  • Ports and adapters must preserve the required clear passage and thread standard.
  • The installed location must allow safe inspection, isolation, drainage and cleaning.

Build the upstream duty with the 12V pump selector, verify final delivery with the tank-to-washer checker, or compare DI and RO-to-DI on the treatment guide.

Current-source boundary

Use exact-model instructions—not a universal micron rule.

These manufacturer examples show why position, screen, ports, pressure loss and service access belong in one decision. They are evidence examples, not endorsements.

Questions before checkout

Water-filter and strainer questions

What water filter do I need for a mobile detailing tank?

Start with the exact pump or pressure-washer instructions. The correct position, screen or cartridge, port, flow and pressure limit are system-specific; a generic micron number is not enough.

Should a 12V water pump have an inlet strainer?

Many pump manufacturers specify an inlet strainer, but use the exact pump manual rather than assuming one screen and fitting suits every model. Preserve inlet flow and service access.

Can an inline filter reduce pressure-washer flow?

Yes. Every housing, element, reducer, valve and hose can add loss, and the loss can increase as debris loads the element. Compare clean pressure-drop evidence and measure the assembled path under the real duty.

Is mesh size the same as micron rating?

No. They are different ways of describing openings and cannot be treated as universally interchangeable without exact manufacturer data. Follow the downstream equipment requirement.

Can I select a filter by thread size?

No. A nominal thread does not prove the internal bore, seal, material, flow direction, pressure rating or pressure drop. Check the smallest clear passage through every adapter.

How often should a mobile detailing water filter be changed?

Use the exact inspection, cleaning and replacement instruction, then shorten the interval if measured delivery falls or source water carries more debris. Do not wait for pump cavitation or washer starvation.
