Mobile detailing startup budgets
What does a mobile detailing setup cost?
Plan a lean £1k test, a £3k working setup or a £5k self-contained candidate—without hiding the utility, payload and cash-reserve decisions behind a shopping list.

A small contingency instead of spending every pound on launch day.
Utility boundary
What this tier assumes
Customer water and suitable customer mains power are agreed before the booking. Equipment remains removable and securely stored in transit.
Upgrade gate
Evidence before spending more
Repeat bookings, measured job time, litres used, machine load and contribution per job.
Do not buy yet
Delay unsupported upgrades
- Water tank or pump
- Generator or large battery system
- Permanent racking
- Dedicated extractor without proven deep-clean demand

Three budgets, three different operating boundaries.
The useful comparison is not how much equipment appears in the van. It is which paid service the setup can deliver, which utilities it still needs and what evidence would justify the next commitment.
| Envelope | When to use it | Utilities | Deliberately omitted | Upgrade gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £1,000Lean validation | A new operator validating paid demand with a narrow, utility-dependent service. | Customer water and suitable customer mains power are agreed before the booking. Equipment remains removable and securely stored in transit. | Water tank or pump | Repeat bookings, measured job time, litres used, machine load and contribution per job. |
| £3,000Working mobile | An operator with validated bookings who needs a more repeatable working setup. | Backup water is included as an allocation, but customer mains power may still be required. Tank, pump and pressure-washer compatibility must be checked as one path. | A generator chosen from headline watts alone | A route log showing water demand, simultaneous electrical load, lost jobs caused by utilities and remaining vehicle payload. |
| £5,000Self-contained candidate | A proven operator testing whether independent water and power will unlock enough profitable work. | Water and power have allocations, but £5,000 does not guarantee a fully self-contained setup. The required litres, watts, surge, runtime and payload still control the answer. | Vehicle purchase or finance assumed inside this budget | Supplier data sheets, measured job demand, a simultaneous-load schedule, filled vehicle weight and a documented payback case. |
Buy in dependency order
Make the service prove the equipment.
- 01Model job profit
Define the paid service.
Set the exterior and interior scope, expected job time, consumables and contribution before selecting machines.
- 02Size the water day
Map water and power.
Calculate litres per job, simultaneous watts, motor surge and the usable runtime required for the working day.
- 03Check loaded weight
Protect vehicle payload.
Count the driver, passengers, fuel, filled water, equipment, racking and routine stock, then secure the load.
- 04Build my startup total
Replace every illustration.
Collect current quotes for the exact compatible components, launch essentials and reserve before committing cash.
Common budget failures
Where the shopping total goes wrong.
- The vehicle is missing. Purchase, finance, servicing and business motor cover can sit outside a tempting equipment-only headline.
- Admin and cover are treated as optional. Legal duties and insurance depend on the business, staff, vehicle and local market.
- Self-contained becomes oversized. Unused water and power consume cash, payload and space on every journey.
- Machines arrive before dependencies. Flow, pressure, fittings, watts, surge, ventilation and service support all need to work together.
- Every pound is spent. A reserve protects the launch from missing fittings, early repairs and slower-than-expected demand.
Commercial reality
A setup only pays back through profitable completed work.
Purchase cost alone cannot predict payback. Model average job revenue, variable cost, realistic monthly jobs and any monthly overhead. The calculator shows the mathematical break-even point; it does not assume demand or guarantee bookings.
Using the plan outside the UK
Keep the ratios. Replace the money and rules.
The allocation logic can be used worldwide, but the pound figures are not live currency conversions. Choose GBP, USD or EUR in the startup-cost calculator, enter local supplier quotes and check local vehicle, electrical, waste-water, insurance, tax and licensing requirements. Amazon links on this page lead to Amazon UK; use equivalent retailers in your country where appropriate.
Questions before buying
Mobile detailing setup cost FAQs
Does the £1,000 mobile detailing setup include a vehicle?
No. All three envelopes exclude vehicle purchase or finance, tax, premises, personal income and ongoing insurance premiums unless you enter those costs separately. The £1,000 tier assumes a narrow, removable setup using agreed customer water and power.
Can I start mobile detailing from a car?
A removable, utility-dependent setup may work from a suitable car if the equipment can be stored and restrained safely, the loaded vehicle remains within its limits and the insurer has confirmed business use. Vehicle suitability depends on the actual load and work pattern.
Does spending £5,000 make the setup fully self-contained?
Not necessarily. Independence depends on measured water demand, continuous and surge power, usable runtime, ventilation, payload and service choice. A £5,000 allocation can test the direction, but the required system may cost more or need a narrower service.
Should I buy every equipment category immediately?
No. Buy in dependency order and only when the service justifies it. A tank depends on daily litres and payload; a pump depends on the complete water path; and a power source depends on simultaneous loads, surge and required runtime.
